Whitewater Trips for Boy
Scouts and Venturers
There are many great whitewater rafting trips for
Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews. This is a great summer activity
to replace traditional Scout camp and earn the 50
Miler Award or the Whitewater
Merit Badge.
We can help you find a rafting trip that is right
for your troop. One of our owners (Zach) is an Eagle Scout who worked
at Boy Scout summer camps over eight summers including two summers
in a high adventure base in the Sierra Mountains. He can bring his
knowledge of Scouting and rafting together to recommend a great
trip.
We can typically negotiate a discount for Boy Scout
Troops due to the large size of the groups and the different requirements
for food. We've listed several trips that can satisfy the requirements
for the 50
Miler Award.

The Klamath River (California)
The Klamath River begins near Crater Lake in Oregon
and flows to its outlet in the Pacific Ocean in Northern California.
Along its way it picks up water from the Siskiyou Mountains, Marble
Mountains, Salmon Mountains, and the Trinity Alps. This trip will
typically begin along Highway 96 near the town of Happy Camp in
Northern California.
The entire length of this run is along Highway 96,
but it is rarely noticeable while you are on the river. The river
hass mostly class II and III, except for the class IV Dragon's
Tooth Rapid. This rapid is a challenging drop that is easy
to walk around as the guides run the boats through.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon (Idaho)
Rafting down the Middle Fork of the Salmon is truly
considered a world class trip. The river trip starts at Boundary
Creek or Indian Creek amidst a pine forest and changes ecological
zones each day until we end up floating through the steep-walled
'Impassible canyon.' This canyon is a great place to earn Environmental
Sciences Merit Badge.
The first half of the trip tends to be cool and we
will have the opportunity to stop at one of the numerous hot springs
along the river. There are many side streams along the river that
continually add flow as we make our way through the canyon. This
trip is ideal for older scouts looking for a true adventure.

The Main Salmon (Idaho)
The Main Salmon, also known as the "River of
no Return," is a large river. This canyon has large beaches,
large campsites, large rapids, and large stretches of flat water.
This trip would be great for a Boy Scout group due to its great
campsites and many rapids that are both safe and fun. Most outfitters
provide inflatable kayaks which are always a favorite for young
boys.
This is a wild and scenic wilderness canyon so there
is no road access along the river. Black ear, moose, elk, and big
horn sheep are common.
